What is LASIK?
LASIK is a laser eye surgery that permanently changes the shape of the cornea to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. The name stands for laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis.
The surgeon cuts a thin flap in the cornea with a blade device called a microkeratome or with a femtosecond laser, folds the flap back, reshapes the tissue underneath with an excimer laser, then puts the flap back in place. The FDA regulates the lasers, not the surgeons, and publishes the conditions that make someone a poor candidate.
